|StoryTown Reading Program
The K-5 core reading program used at Rochester Elementary School is StoryTown published by Harcourt School Publishers, copyright 2008.The program provides a solid foundation for the development of focus reading skills and strategies, robust vocabulary and genre knowledge. It also provides opportunities to think critically and build higher order thinking skills.
StoryTown offers students the opportunity to receive systematic, explicit instruction in the key elements of reading; phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. A variety of direct instruction and practice routines for comprehension and fluency are provided in the classroom daily. Comprehension instruction is designed to help students understand, remember, and communicate with others about what they read.
Components of StoryTown for students include the anthology reader, leveled books, practice skill book, phonics, spelling and grammar books. Weekly assessments are administered as well as theme tests and benchmarks at the beginning, middle and end of the school year. The key components of the program to help reinforce core skills are literacy centers and leveled readers. These materials are aligned with the weekly skills to support students at all levels.
The technology component of our Language Arts program is LEXIA.This website offers a fun and interactive way for teachers to motivate their students and to create excitement for classroom learning.
There are a number of features that help to distinguish the Everyday Mathematics curriculum. From real-life problem solving to a balanced approach to instruction and an emphasis on home/school partnerships, Everyday Mathematics is a researched-based program that assists students in the learning and development of their mathematical power.
The program includes many outstanding, valuable components. The application of math to real world situations is emphasized. Numbers, skills and math concepts are not presented in isolation, but are linked to situations that are relevant to the student's everyday lives. Each lesson includes time for whole-group instruction as well as small group, partner and individual activities. The program provides many methods for basic skills practice and review. These include written and mental math routines, practice with fact triangles, Math Boxers, homework, and a wide variety of math games. Daily Home Links (Grades K-3) and Study Links (Grades 4-5) provide opportunities for family members to participate in their students' learning. Study Links are provided for most lessons in grades 4-5, and all grades include periodic letters to help keep parents informed about their children's school day experience with Everyday Math. In addition, every student in grades 1-6 is provided a Student Reference Book that will help assist parents in working on homework assignments and unfamiliar concepts.
